Need Advice On Organic Gardening? Read On

If you are looking to start your own organic garden, there are a few tips that will help you steer clear of the main problems people tend to encounter when they begin their own gardens from scratch. The following article presents general guidelines that will lead you to successful planting.

Plants need a sufficient amount of CO2 for proper maximum growth. In general, higher amounts of CO2 are related to better plant growth. A greenhouse will provide the best method of providing enough CO2 for your plants. CO2 levels are best kept high, in order to provide optimal growing conditions for your plants.

Most people design their gardens with plants in their hands and a shovel. However, the best idea is to wait to choose your plants after you have decided upon a layout or landscaping design. Once you have completed the landscaping, move on to the last step to your garden; planting your favorite flowers, shrubs and trees.

If you are going to be doing a lot of work in your garden very close to the ground, such as weeding or planting, use a garden stool or pad to protect your knees. This will make it easier to get back up again and move once you finish, and will also reduce bruising on your knees.

To get rid of the snails plaguing your garden, set an open container of beer on its side where you usually find them. The snails will be drawn to the scent of the beer and trap themselves. If you’d like to make this trap even more effective, try adding a little bit of brewer’s yeast to the can.

Always fertilize your garden. Manure is probably the best fertilizer. Choose a commercial product to reduce the risks of pathogen exposure. There are a number of options for fertilizer, but the truth is that what you use is unimportant; you just have to remember to use something.

When you are planning where to put your garden, choose a location that allows it to get plenty of sun. If you place it in the shade, you will be restricting the types of plants that you are able to grow. For example, tomatoes need a lot of sunshine to thrive and a shaded area just won’t work for them.

Use plants to get some autumn color. That idea is actually far from the truth. Fall is the most colorful time of year for foliage. Maple, beech, and dogwood display colors ranging from dark crimson to light yellow. When thinking about shrubs, consider barberry, hydrangea and cotoneaster.

Always protect yourself from the sun when you are outdoors working in the garden; you can do this by wearing clothes that will shield you from the sun. Make sure you wear a wide brimmed hat along with sunglasses and plenty of sunscreen. When you keep your eyes and skin properly protected, you are less likely to get a sunburn. You also lower your risk in developing cancer of the skin.

Organic gardens are becoming more and more popular these days. Learning to garden without dangerous chemicals is good for the environment as well, not to mention for your own health. Knowing some basic rules of gardening, as well as understanding your climate and its limitations, will help you sustain your garden long term.
