Gardening Tips For Green Thumbs And Newbies Alike

Many people want a nice garden. For a garden full of healthy, vibrant plants, though, there are many factors you need to consider. There is much fun and much work involved in gardening. Some basic tips will help make your work more efficient, making both the process and result more fun.

To prevent shocking your plants, you must gradually introduce new temperatures and other conditions to them. Try placing them outside in sunlight for about an hour or maybe two the first day. As you continue the first week of the project, gradually extend the duration of sun exposure. At week’s end, the plants should be welcoming of their new home.

Spend the additional money to fence in your garden. You are about to make real investment in time and money to create a garden of your own, but it can all go to waste through the stomping feet of playful children, pets and other small animals. Protect your investment with a small fence that keeps the kids and critters out.

Do not mow your grass when it is wet. When you mow wet grass, the wet grass clippings will turn into mush and stick to your lawnmower’s blades, which can result in jams. In addition, if wet grass clippings get onto a paved area of your garden, the paved area will have grass stains.

To cut down on the time you spend pruning and pulling weeds, make sure that all the tools you use are sharpened and cleaned. A dull or dirty tool will make basic gardening tasks much more challenging, and can significantly increase the work you have to put into your garden. Caring for your tools regularly is more than worth the effort it takes.

Wear comfortable shoes and clothing when gardening. Never work in the garden in bare feet or sandals. Wear shoes that lace up and give good cushioning and arch support. If it is hot and sunny out, wear a hat to shade from the sun and clothes that will protect the skin from burning. The more comfortable you are, the more you will enjoy your garden.

When you are transplanting a plant, do not pile the soil higher than the top of the root. A root crown that is always wet will eventually rot. Plant it in a way, where the water will drain away from the stem. If the water runs toward the plant, it will wash more soil onto the top of the root, causing root rot.

When you buy seeds for your garden, be sure to purchase seeds that are labeled ‘certified organic.’ This ensures that your plants will be organic throughout their lifespan and that the seeds you are buying aren’t contaminated with chemical fertilizers or pesticides. Watch out for labels, such as ‘genetically engineered’ or any mention of ‘natural’ that does not include the phrase ‘certified organic.’

With these tips, you’re better equipped to grow the most beautiful garden you can imagine. In learning how to create your dream garden, you’ll also be growing as a person. That’s because learning how to nurture your plants will not only help you reach the goal of having a great garden, but it will help you learn to nurture yourself.
